Forty-five Mothers’ Union members including friends of members enjoyed a lovely trip out to Jacqueline Iddon’s garden, Bretherton, Leyland. We set off from Laurel Street, Tottington at 10.00am prompt and arrived home safely at 5.30pm, thanks to our excellent driver. We were blessed with dry weather on arrival at the garden with a show of sunshine at approximately 3.30pm.

We were welcomed by Jacqueline (gardener & flower arranger), Thompson (sculptor/husband), Tilly (printmaker, painter and sculptor/daughter) and friends, together with flowing refreshments served in fine bone chinaware – tea/coffee and shortbread fingers!

We enjoyed a guided tour of the garden by Jacqueline, an introduction to Thompson Dagnall’s sculptor works followed by a delicious traditional Afternoon Tea. We were treated to an array of irresistible homemade sandwiches, a variety of savoury pastries, and Tilly’s homemade scones with strawberries and cream – all very tasty!!!
The Garden is 1.5 acres split into different areas, a hot Mediterranean garden with bottle wall and folly for sun loving plants and a walled garden. Jacqueline and Thompson have recently converted the Victorian fern house into an alpine house. There is a woodland walkway for shade loving plants and a large stream fed pond planted with a wide range of unusual foliage & flowering plants, alongside climbing roses, clematis, shrubs & herbaceous borders. In the garden there is sculpture and a hardy plant nursery, with a wide selection of perennial plants of interest to the keen gardener & flower arranger. There is a large garden studio and conservatory with indoor seating as insurance against the weather!

The garden has been featured in Lancashire Life, Flora Magazine, Gardens Illustrated and Lancashire Magazine – what a wonderful family claim to fame!!!
A gallery is open in the garden to house the sculpture of Thompson, in the form of a traditional log cabin made of whole larch logs with a green roof, and a studio where Tilly produces her wonderful artwork.

To accompany our afternoon tea, we meandered gently through the garden at our leisure and enjoyed a short demonstration on flower arranging from Jacqueline with a free raffle to round off the trip. We were able to purchase a variety of Tilly’s beautiful homemade cards that are also available on her Etsy website ( and picked up a flyer for pending events at Jacqueline’s beautiful garden. What a way to spend the day – idyllic! We were very well looked after and the food was scrumptious, in the surroundings of a beautiful garden.

The company was a delight, in a way that provided friendship and enjoyment on a wonderful day!

Thank you Mavis, Margaret & Isobel for organising the trip and Mavis, for the inspiration and foresight to recommend – we’ll certainly be back to pay another visit
